A NEW family fun run has been announced as part of this year’s City of Newport Half Marathon.
St David’s Hospice Care, organisers of the popular event, is encouraging families and children to take part in the two kilometre run along river front pathways on Saturday, March 4, the day before the half marathon.
Simon Pullen, centre director for Friars Walk which is supporting the family run, said: “We are delighted to support St David’s for the Friars Walk Family Fun Run.
“It’s the first time for this event to take place and it is a great opportunity for children and families to participate in this fun run, hopefully they will develop a taste for running and participate in the half marathon in the future.”
Registration is open for the family fun run, which starts at 2pm.
Christine Vorres, event director, said: “We have considered adding a family element to the Admiral City of Newport Half Marathon for a long time, so are really thrilled that Friars Walk are helping us to host the fun run.
“Thanks to their support, all proceeds will be used to provide hospice services when and where they are needed.
“We hope that families will come along, maybe in fancy dress or St David’s Day Daffodil hats and enjoy participating.”
Runners are also being encouraged to take part in this year’s Argus-backed half marathon, which raises money for St David’s Hospice Care.
This year’s race will start in the city centre, follow a scenic route along the Riverfront path past iconic bridges and on up to Newport Castle, before heading out to Caerleon and back.
Road closures and restrictions will be in place from 6am, before the race starts at 9am.
The event raises hundreds of thousands of pounds every year and is a vital fundraiser for St David’s Hospice, enabling patients to receive free care. Register online for the family fun run at stdavidshospicecare.org or ring 01633 851051. If not sold out , runners can also register in the University of Wales building on the day.
