A MAN who kicked his former best friend in the head and left him lying in the road before a car ran him over has been jailed.

Alex Jones, 22, of Evans Street, Newport, was involved in a drunken New Year’s Eve brawl in Edward VII Avenue, Newport, which left his best friend Connor Mockridge, 19, with potentially life-changing injuries, Cardiff Crown Court heard today.

Jones was seen swinging punches as part of a group in the road who were fighting, before finally attacking his former flat mate, Mr Mockridge, the court heard.

Jones grabbed Mr Mockridge, threw him to the floor and then kicked him in the head, leaving him motionless.

Around one minute later a car ran him over, the court heard.

Mr Mockridge was left in a wheelchair with significant injuries to his pelvis, which was "essentially shattered", the court heard.

It remains unclear whether the injuries sustained will be life-changing.

Judge Thomas Crowther sentenced Jones to 32 months in prison, of which he will serve at least half.
