A DANCE school in Bettws, Newport, is doing a six-nights show next week to raise money for six different local charities – including one set up in memory of a Newport teenager who died last month.

The show by GLD School of Dance, which will take place in the Dolman Theatre from Monday to Saturday next week, will involve 200 dancers and aims to be a celebration of all kind of dances.

Dance school owner Gemma Chalmers said: “This is an annual show, but, for the first time, the show will run for six nights and raise money for six different charities.

“Over the last 12 years, we have raised £18,000.”

This year, the show will support Newport’s homeless shelter, Newport Women’s Aid, Ieuan the lion memorial fund, All creatures great and small, Rowan’s hospice and Kate’s voice - set up in memory of a Newport teenager who died last month.

The 33-year-old said they chose charities that were close to their hearts.

She said: “Rowan’s Hospice looked after a grandmother I was close with, we will make a donation in her name.

“The Newport teenager who died went to school with a lot of my dancers, I didn’t teach her but I could have done. She could have been one of my students.”

Amongst others, the two hour show will have a section about strong women, aiming to show young girls that all you need to do is believe in yourself and that there is always someone you can talk to.

Mrs Chalmers, of Almond Drive, in Malpas, said that it takes her one year to plan the show.

“In this show, I have covered everything, from street dance to Bollywood and from musical to tap,” she said. “The girls in the show are fantastic, they are aged two to 30.

“We are a proper community school, anything to do with Bettws and Malpas, we are there – it would be nice if the community could help us support these charities now.”

Lucy Commons, aged 15, is one of the dancers taking part in the show.

She said: “I love dancing in front of people. After Christmas, this is my favourite time of the year.

“I love dancing because it makes me confident, I dance all the time and would love be a dancer when I grow up.”
