A WOMAN is in hospital after sustaining “life-threatening injuries” in a crash on Newport Bridge.

Gwent Police officers, and paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance and Wales Air Ambulance service, were called to Clarence Place at 1.30pm, after an incident involving the pedestrian and a car.

The woman was taken by road, with a police escort, to the University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff.

The bridge was closed for around four-and-a-half hours as a result of the incident.

Eyewitnesses who saw the collision, said it involved a silver Ford Focus.

Tricia Jordan said: “I was coming across the bridge in the opposite direction and I saw it happen right in front of me.

The 31-year-old of Caerleon Road, said she had recently completed a first aid course, and rushed to help.

“I left my car on the wrong side of the road in the bus lane so that I could try to help,” she added.

she added that she was joined by another passerby.

“I had only completed by first aid training three weeks ago – I had hoped that I wouldn’t have to use it.

Other members of the public called for emergency help.

“The driver of the car seemed quite shaken up afterwards,” added Mrs Jordan.

“I think he was talking to the police in their car when I left.”

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We were called shortly before 1.30pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Clarence Place in Newport.

“We sent a paramedic in a rapid response car, a crew in an emergency ambulance, a BASICS doctor and a Wales Air Ambulance to the scene.”

Meanwhile, a Gwent Police spokeswoman added: “At 1.30pm today we received reports of a collision between a Silver Ford Focus and a female pedestrian at Clarence Place in Newport.

"The pedestrian has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries."

No further update on the condition ofthe injured woman was available as we went to press last night.

The bridge was re-opened before 6pm.
