A PAEDOPHILE from Cwmbran, serving time in prison for child sex abuse, has received a four-year extension to his sentence for abusing young boys.

Last year, Neil Stephens, aged 50, of Pontnewydd area, pleaded guilty to multiple sexual assaults on a girl and possessing indecent images and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

On Friday March 24, he appeared at Newport Crown Court from HMP Parc Prison in Bridgend and pleaded guilty to multiple sexual offence charges relating to two boys.

The offences happened between May and November 2015 and were reported in June 2016, while Stephens was already in prison.

Andrew Davies, prosecuting, said that the abuse involved "pre-planning" and "subterfuge" with abuse happening on several occasions.

Gareth Williams, defending, said he would not mitigate to reflect the "seriousness" of the offending and the "long term rehabilitation" for the boys' families.

He also asked the judge to consider what length of jail time he would have given to Stephens for these offences if he had known about them during the sentencing in April 2016.

Judge Daniel Williams said the defendant’s culpability was high, describing Stephens as "predatory", “extremely dangerous” and of "high risk" to young girls and boys.

He sentenced Stephens to a four-year sentence added to his current prison time and he must serve two thirds of this sentence before being released on licence.

The defendant will be subject to a three-year licence period and can only be released from prison after a parole board decide it is "safe to do so".

He will also be listed on the sexual offenders register for life and will be banned from working with children and vulnerable adults.
