TWO life size baby dragon twins have emerged from their eggs in Caerphilly.

The magnificent six foot long babies are fitted with animatronic technology which allows them to move their wings, heads and necks.

The pair, one blue, one red, "hatched out" of giant eggs outside Caerphilly Castle and are being nursed by their proud giant parents Dewi and Dwynwen.

And they are sure to be one of the main school half-term attractions next week before spreading their wings to appear at six other castles throughout Wales in the next three months..

The dragons are the latest addition to the Welsh Government’s historic environment service family of dragons which reside at some of Wales’ most spectacular historic sites.

Nestled beneath their parents the new-born boy and girl dragons, who are yet to be named, both weighed a healthy 20kg and have already been spotted wiggling their wings and looking alert.

The new parents landed at the castle last month just weeks before a huge nest containing two giant eggs appeared alongside them.

Over the past two weeks visitors watched in anticipation as the eggs showed signs of movement.

And finally the new-born dragons with shiny scales and small, pointed wings broke through the shells and opened their eyes to the world for the first time.

Welsh government cabinet member Ken Skates said: "Visitor figures for the parents over Easter shot up by 70 per cent and I have no doubt that locals and visitors alike will flock to catch a glimpse of the new arrivals this summer."

The family of dragons were brought to life by a team of 16 at Cardiff-based prop design specialist, Wild Creations.

Parents Dewi and Dwynwen, who weigh a whopping two tonnes each, and the babies were sculpted and moulded before being cast and built out of fibreglass.
