FRESH from winning a third Champions League title in four years with Real Madrid, footballer Gareth Bale is the latest superstar to sign up for the Celebrity Cup golf tournament.

Bale will be joining rugby legends Sir Gareth Edwards and Jonathan Davies, football great Craig Bellamy and TV presenter Gethin Jones in a Wales side captained by actor and comedian Rob Brydon at the Celtic Manor – for the star-studded golf event on July 1-2.

Bale said: “I really enjoyed playing in the Celebrity Cup two years ago and winning with Wales was the icing on the cake of a brilliant weekend. I would have loved to have played again last year and helped defend the trophy, but I was kept a bit busy with other Wales commitments at the Euros!

“So I’m really looking forward to going back to Celtic Manor and hopefully we can regain the title from Scotland this year. I can’t wait to be part of the team again and I hope we can all raise a lot of money for the Marie Keating Foundation.”

The home side will compete against England, Ireland and Scotland in the four nations event. Other stars of sport and showbiz playing in the Celebrity Cup sponsored by Bulmers include TV personalities Denise Van Outen, Bradley Walsh, Anton Du Beke and Ben Shephard for England; actor James Nesbitt and singing sensations Keith Duffy, Ronan Keating and Brian McFadden for Ireland; and Scottish rugby stars Rory Lawson, Thom Evans and Max Evans.

Celtic Manor chief executive Ian Edwards said: “We are delighted that one of the world’s most exciting footballers will be joining us for the Celebrity Cup.

“It was brilliant to watch Gareth enjoy another fantastic success on the football field just down the road in Cardiff and it’s wonderful news that fans will have another opportunity to see him in action on the golf course here at Celtic Manor.

“He is part of the strongest line-up we have ever assembled for the Celebrity Cup sponsored by Bulmers so we’re looking forward to a thrilling tournament.”

Thousands of golf fans and celebrity spotters will flock to Celtic Manor to watch the cup in July. As well as the opportunity to see top-notch golfing action up close and personal with plenty of on-course banter, there will be live music and food and bar outlets in the tented village.

Visitors can also experience the VIP treatment in Hospitality, the Premier Lounge or at Saturday evening’s glittering Gala Dinner, which will raise funds for the Marie Keating Foundation, the charity which was set up in honour of Ronan’s mother to promote cancer awareness and the importance of early detection.
