A POLICE officer who was jailed after biting a revellers lip during a row about queue jumping at a nightclub has been sacked.

DC Stephen Smith, 33, an off-duty Gwent Police officer, flew into a rage as he queued to get into Brewhouse in Cardiff to watch an England vs Wales rugby match.

CCTV footage captured the moment Smith grabbed Jonathan Harris by the neck, pulled him towards his face and bit him.

As previously reported, Smith, of Tredegar, was jailed for a year for 'unlawful wounding' at Merthyr Crown Court after being found guilty by a jury in a four-day trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

At a special case hearing on June 27, the Gwent Police officer was dismissed by the Chief Constable for breaching the force's 'Standards of Professional Behaviour'.

This included authority, respect & courtesy, use of force, duties and responsibilities and discreditable conduct.

Gwent Police Chief Constable at the time, Jeff Farrar, said: “The public rightly expects the highest standard of ethical and professional behaviour from its officers.

“DC Smith’s behaviour fell well below this standard, he has not only lost his job but his liberty as a consequence of his actions.”
