A spokeswoman from Gwent Police said: "We are investigating a report of a serious assault on a woman that is alleged to have taken place sometime between 3.10am and 5.40am this morning, in the Afon Village area of Newport near the railway bridge.

"A dedicated team of detectives are carrying out extensive enquiries.  A cordon is currently in place and community support officers are directing traffic, we’d like to thank you for your patience and co-operation.

"Officers are also patrolling the local area and are available to give advice to any residents if needed."

She added: "We are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have been in the area during that time. If you have any information please call 101 quoting log 59 1/8/17."

Our reporter at the scene Tomos Povey says that there are two police cars at the top of Rivermead Way. A footpath leading up Risca Road is also shut.

Jason Jarvis, a resident, said: "Police have been here since early this morning.

My wife tried leaving for work along the closed road but couldn't. She had to take the road near Morrisons. "

THE main road leading into Afon Village has been reportedly closed off by police.

About five to six police cars have been reported to be on the Rogerstone road.

Debbie Bowen, who lives in Afon Village, said: "The main route in has been shut off.

"You can only get in and out of there near the Morrisons road."
