FIVE doves were found dumped in a cardboard box near Newport and the RSPCA Cymru has launched an urgent appeal to find out where they came from.

The charity rescued the birds, which were found in a poor state, on a stretch of cycle track between Usk and the Celtic Manor hotel.

The charity is investigating where the doves came from, and why they were dumped in a box.

One of the doves had two rings on - one green in colour, and one yellow - though these were not numbered. The doves are now undergoing veterinary inspection after being rescued by the RSPCA.

A passer-by first spotted the doves on Sunday evening, August 7, and later confined them to a cage before reporting to the RSPCA the following day, when they were collected.

Sian Burton, RSPCA animal welfare officer, said: “These poor doves appeared to be in a really poor state, and somebody must know how they came to be dumped in this way.

“Only one of the doves had rings on - and these were not numbered, so we’re urging anyone with any pertinent information to contact us.

“RSPCA’s inspectorate appeal line can be reached on 0300 123 8018, and calls are treated in confidence.”
