A NEW emergency defibrillator could be installed at a Newport Methodist church if a funding bid is successful.
The city's branch of the University of the Third Age, which provides opportunities for older people to learn new skills and meet friends, has applied for funding from the Welsh Church Acts Fund to be able to buy the life-saving equipment.
If the bid, which will cover 60 per cent of the total cost, is successful the defibrillator will be installed at the organisation's base at Newport's Shaftesbury Street Methodist Church.
Although Newport City Council is responsible for awarding grants through the fund, the cash itself will not come from the authority's pockets.
Although the council usually awards the grants in October or November, there is provision for applications considered 'urgent' to be awarded at another time.
The council is due to make a decision on the application next week.
In total the council has £50,539.94 to hand out from the fund during the current financial year.
