A FAMILY fun day - which will include a teabag throwing competition - is taking place this Saturday, August 26, for our 125 Appeal.

Held at The Ponthir House Inn, which is located on Caerleon Road in Ponthir, the money raised at this event will go towards the appeal which marks the 125th anniversary of the South Wales Argus.

We launched the 125 Appeal to raise money to help with the huge costs of running St David’s Hospice Care in Newport and to enable them to continue their vital work in our community.

The hospice is the UK’s largest provider of hospice at home care that now cares for more than 3,200 patients and families every year, at a cost of more than £7.5 million.

People from across the region have been holding specially 125 themed fundraising events including gym and running challenges, quiz nights and singing events.

Now, the staff at the popular Ponthir House Inn have decided to organise a ‘Staycation’ family day for this Saturday.

A spokeswoman for St David’s Hospice said: “The event is free to attend and you can look forward to a barbecue, family activities, a raffle and music.

“The event will begin at 2pm and there will be music from 3pm until 10pm.

“The event will also host the World Championship Teabag Throwing Competition!

“What better way to spend an afternoon with friends and family?”

Live bands playing on the day will include The House of Betty Blue, she added.

Earlier this year, the pub hosted a music festival on May 28 for our appeal.

At the time, Barrie Walden, landlord at the Ponthir House Inn, said: “I have a few regular customers who work for the hospice and it’s a charity we have supported for a few years, so I thought I would get involved as well.”

He said everyone is welcome on Saturday and that they are really looking forward to it.

There is no entry fee for the event, but donations to St David’s Hospice Care will be welcome.
