VIEWS are being sought on plans to introduce a legal requirement for councils and health boards to provide autistic people with support.

A proposed Autism Act was suggested by Welsh Conservative AM Paul Davies and was selected to be carried forward in a lottery of back-bench legislation.

If it becomes law the Welsh Government would be required to publish a strategy for meeting the needs of adults and children with autism, while councils and health boards would be legally obligated to provide support.

Other potential elements of a Welsh Autism Act would include the collection of data on the needs of autistic people so services can be planned accordingly, along with requiring those working with people with the condition to undertake training.

Councils and health boards could also be required to publish data on services they provide and work to raise awareness and understanding of the condition and ensure parents and carers are involved in decisions.

A consultation on the plans has been launched and will run until November.

Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Mr Davies said: "Services have been patchy in the past and an Autism Act could play a pivotal role in ensuring that people with this condition are given the support they need.

"This is a game-changing opportunity to ensure that Wales is leading the way in providing effective, consistent services for those affected by autism."
