A CHILDREN’S charity has been awarded a Home Office grant to develop ways of supporting boys and young men who have been abused through sexual exploitation.

The £184,873 grant will allow Barnardo’s to work with at risk boys and young men to identify ways they can fall into abuse and help them recover from abusive experiences.

The project will cover eight Police and Crime Commissioners’ areas, including Gwent.

Sarah Crawley, the director of Barnardo’s Cymru, welcomed the funding. “It will enable Barnardo’s to develop a greater understanding of the assessment and support required for young men who are victims of child sexual abuse.

“We will work to ensure the most appropriate and useful resources are created to improve their outcomes and those of victims in the future.

“Barnardo’s has developed this proposal based on our identification that young male victims of sexual abuse are under-represented in services supporting abuse victims, whilst over represented within the criminal justice system.”
