A GIANT vegetable grower believes he has achieved another world record for his giant poblano chili pepper.

Kevin Fortey, of Cwmbran, is currently at the Canna UK National Giant Vegetables Championship at the Malvern Autumn Show in Worcestershire. The championship takes place tomorrow and Saturday and both Mr Fortey and fellow giant veg grower Ian Neale from Newport are at the event.

Speaking to the Argus, Mr Fortey, said he and Mr Neale had both grown different types of chili peppers, with his poblano pepper weighing in at 348 grams and Mr Neale’s at 306 grams.

If no one has pipped him with a heavier chili, this will be Mr Fortey’s second world record for his giant vegetables.

In addition in 2010 he also broke the UK record for the heaviest marrow - weighing a colossal 12 stones and three pounds.

Mr Fortey said yesterday: “It’s incredible being here. I have just weighed my chili and its the heaviest so far.

“The results come in late tonight (Friday) but someone could bring a heavier one yet.

“Its great because people are queuing by the tent to get their vegetables weighed. There are so many people her and it’s fantastic to see.

“We (Mr Fortey and Mr Neale) are filming with Countryfile this weekend.”
