ONE of Newport’s most popular parks has been left in a “disgraceful” state following an event last weekend.

The three-day Oktoberfest in Tredegar Park saw thousands of people descend on the park for the Bavarian-themed fun.

But pensioner Arthur Spencer, who walks his dogs in the park every morning, said he was shocked by the state it had been left in, with parts of grassed areas churned up and paths covered in mud.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said.

“I spoke to the groundsman and he said it will take months to clear it up.”

Calling the state of the park “disgraceful”, the 71-year-old, of Ridgeway, added: “They could have had the decency to get someone in to clear the path.

“When the circuses and fairgrounds are is there they always leave the place immaculate.”

A council spokeswoman said: “The use of the site at Tredegar Park, Newport, was agreed with the Oktoberfest company.

“This is not a partnership arrangement with the council.

“The firm hired the site, had sole use and has a duty to return the site to its original condition.

“The council will ensure that this work is undertaken and would like to apologise to the public whilst this is dealt with.”

The organisers of Oktoberfest was contacted for comment.
