TWO suspects alleged to be involved in the smuggling of European nationals into the UK have been released under investigation after they were arrested in Caerphilly.

The 32-year-old man and 66-year-old woman, were detained and interviewed at Newport Central police station following raids at a house in Commercial Street, Pontymister, on Thursday.

A 27-year-old man has also been released after being arrested by officers in the Peckham area of London as part of Operation Telire.

A Home Office spokesman said that all three suspects have been released but the investigation against them continues.

The operation, led by the Immigration Enforcement Criminal and Financial Investigation (CFI) team, is looking into an alleged organised crime group said to be smuggling people in caravans from Albania and Turkey into the UK.

So far the taskforce has thwarted 13 smuggling attempts into the UK, preventing 115 Albanian and three Turkish nationals from being forced into work by the smugglers.

Those promised entry into the country were also made to pay £10,000 each, and made to pay off the sum through exploitative means - including sexual work.
