CAERPHILLY County Borough Council has backed calls to ensure that the Welsh local government workforce receives a fair wage.

Councillors Dave Poole, Colin Gordon, Barbara Jones, Sean Morgan and Lisa Phipps submitted a Notice of Motion to a meeting of full council on Tuesday calling on fellow members to support the following resolutions.

They proposed that the Local Government Association is asked to effectively lobby central government to fund the implementation of the NJC Pay Spine Review caused by the direct effect of the National Living Wage.

A letter will be sent to provide local government in Wales with the funding to ensure a fair and sustainable pay increase is made to the local government workforce in Wales also.

Finally, the Welsh Local Government Association is asked to work with the trade unions in pursuance of a fair funding deal for local government.

Council leader Cllr Dave Poole said: “We wish to see an end to austerity and an improvement in funding that enables authorities to fund a fair pay increase for its workforce.

"Our staff play a critical role delivering a wide range of key frontline services to all sections of the community.

“It is about time local authority employees receive the financial recognition they deserve.”
