KIND-HEARTED bikers have made a special delivery of Christmas presents to a children’s centre, after the community rallied in support of an appeal.

More than a dozen bikers in festive outfits and a Father Christmas gathered outside McCann’s Rock N Ale Bar in High Street, Newport, today, Saturday.

There, they gathered dozens of presents which have been donated by members of the public, following an appeal by McCann’s Rock N Ale Bar and Mad Hatters tearoom.

The wrapped presents, which included train sets and soft toys, were then transported to Serennu Children’s Centre in Rogerstone, Newport.

Amy McCann, owner of McCann’s Rock N Ale Bar, said she was ‘amazed’ by the response of the public to the appeal which was launched around three weeks ago.

“Since I put the appeal on Facebook we have had strangers just walk in and bring presents,” she said.

“A man who I don’t even know walked in with three sackfuls of brand new presents.

“It’s been absolutely amazing.”

Mrs McCann said they chose Serennu Children’s Centre as her daughter, Laila, aged five, attends and that it is a “lovely place for children.”

Bikers from across Gwent rallied together to transport the presents, many having seen the appeal put out on Facebook.

The bar and tearoom are planning to make the appeal an annual event after this year’s success.

Karen White, owner of Mad Hatter’s said: “The response has been 100 times better than what we had thought.

“We want to encourage people to come up this end of town and I think this type of thing helps.

“Hopefully this will be the first of many.”

The generous gifts were warmly received at the children’s centre, where they were placed under a Christmas tree.

Donna Morgan, Serennu Children’s Centre manager, said the presents will greatly benefit the children.

She said: “We are really grateful for the donation and the support of the local community.

“The children will really benefit from the fantastic support of the local community this Christmas.”
