GIFTS galore have been collected to provide Christmas treats for rescue animals - and birds - across south Wales, through a festive Gwent-based appeal.

The Santa Paws Gwent 2017 appeal has built on the success of an inaugural effort last year, and for weeks, generous donors have been dropping off boxes and bags of food and tasty treats, toys, and other items at more than 20 collection points across the area.

Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and other creatures will benefit from the donations, which are being wrapped up for distribution to rescue shelters and charities.

"It's been brilliant, bigger and better this year, and we're going to be helping out a range of rescue organisations," said Sarah Lavender, from Newport, one of the appeal organisers.

There has also been the opportunity to donate money to the appeal this year, and donations are still being taken through the link at https://santapawsgwent.com - where more details are available, and there is also a link to the appeal's Facebook page.

The website also contains information about the Santa Paws Gwent 2017 sponsors - the animal lovers who have driven the appeal as it has developed during the past two years.
