A PROPOSED hotel in Monmouthshire may not open in time for the Ryder Cup because developments in the area cannot connect to the local sewerage system.

Plans to build a 120-bedroom Days Hotel in Magor have been dealt a blow by Welsh Water, which has requested new developments in the area are not inhabited until October 2010.

This is because work to increase the existing wastewater network, which was due to be completed in April, has been delayed due to funding.

New developments in Undy, Underwood, Wilcrick, Penhow and Langstone also cannot connect to the local sewerage system.

The hotel would provide 40 full-time jobs at the Wales One Business Park near junction 23a of the M4, and building work is expected to be complete some months prior to the Ryder Cup.

Welsh Water put a condition on the planning application which would not allow occupation of the hotel before October 31, 2010 unless the public sewerage system is upgraded before that date.

Other developments which are unable to connect to the sewerage system include plans for three houses on land at West End in Magor and a new house at The Causeway, also in Magor.

Caldicot councillor James Harris said he is concerned developments which would bring extra revenue and employment into the area are being delayed.

At a Monmouthshire county council planning committee meeting this week councillors said they would be arranging a meeting with Welsh Water to discuss the situation.

A spokesman for Welsh Water said: "We had originally intended to carry this work out in April 2009, however all capital expenditure work is carried out on a priority basis and can be subject to change. We now anticipate that the work will be completed by the end of October 2010."

The Days Inn group did not want to comment on the application.

The application was approved by planning committee members.
