TWO Abertillery women are pulling on their walking boots to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

Mother-of-two Karen Corlett, 50, was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, but is now in recovery, after receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Mrs Corlett also had a double mastectomy and her lymph glands removed and recently had breast reconstruction surgery.

Her friends, Pauline Paul and Helen Jones decided to organise a sponsored walk for the charity in a bid to say thank you to the charity for all the help Mrs Corlett received during her treatment.

Initially the friends were going to travel to London to take part in the charity’s annual Moon Walk, but then they thought they would organise their own walk, dubbed “The Starlight Walk.”

Mrs Paul said: “Karen was so brave and with the treatment she had at Nevill Hall and Velindre, we wanted to give a bit back.”

The route is three miles, starting at Old Blaina Road near The Railway Inn, going up to South Griffin Terrace and finishing back at the pub where there will be a live band.

Mrs Jones said: “Karen has been doing very well since receiving treatment, so this event is for her.”

So far 250 sponsor forms have been given out and when walkers arrive for the walk they will receive a bottle of water, some chocolate and a candle. The friends are aiming to raise around £5000 for the charity.

The walk takes place tomorrow.

Sponsor forms are £3 and are available from Abertillery Leisure Centre, Nantyglo Leisure Centre, Pritchards Chemists and The Railway Inn in Abertillery. For more information contact Mrs Paul on 07961929934.
