Off-road bikers threaten rare birds in valleys

RARE birds are being threatened by off-road bikers in Blaenau Gwent.

Nest sites of the lapwing are being disturbed, particularly by scrambler bike activity on open ground in the area.

Once a common sight on farms in Wales, the population has suffered a major decline in recent years.

The Heads of the Valleys Lapwing Key Area is one of a few upland areas in Wales where breeding populations can still be found.

A project was set up in 2006 to help recovery of the species as well as safeguarding and restoring breeding habitats.

But one of the major concerns affecting lapwing survival in the area is the amount of disturbance caused to birds by illegal off-road vehicle activity on certain sites.

Working in partnership, the RSPB, Blaenau Gwent Council and Gwent Police want to raise awareness about the problem and prevent further disturbance at nesting sites.

County ecologist Claire Pooley said: “Lapwing nest in open ground and in some cases motorbikes are riding right through nesting areas, causing potential damage to eggs and chicks.

"The presence of adult birds alarm calling - a loud, distinctive “pee-wit” call, advertises that something is wrong.”

Camilla Smith, RSPB Heads of the Valleys Lapwing Project Officer explained that the birds show a high degree of site faithfulness, returning year after year to the same sites to breed.

She recommended that people avoid riding bikes or walking their dogs through breeding areas.

“If you do accidentally disturb a nest, it is important to leave the vicinity of it as soon as possible so the parent birds can get back to it quickly.

“The longer the adults are away from the nest, the greater the risk that eggs will become vulnerable to chilling or predation.”

We need to task the police off road motorcycle section with getting into these hoodlams and put an end once and for all to this anti-social disorder. Instead of sitting around abergavenny bus station (when it's dry) they ought to get into the community they "serve" and start earning their crust

No mention of the dog walkers in the headline. Why ? "What about Dangerous Dog Owners Threaten Rare Birds"
Once again the innocent, law abiding, fully legal offroaders all tarred with the same brush.
I got a better idea......... get the plod out of abergavenny bus station, the off road squad off the mountains and on the streets clearing up the drug pushers, burgulars, muggers, rapists & bent MP's. Now theres an idea eh ?

I am a keen bird watcher myself and I find this report disturbing. Disturbing in the fact that the reporter is too quick to jump on the band-wagon in regards to off-road vehicle users, but fails to even mention the exact area of concern. Something that I would have though might have been a good idea to mention as maybe the off-road users would then know where to stay away from at nesting times. I have come across many off-road riders and they have always without trouble or argument taken an alternative direction once they have been made aware of issues such as this. Clear signs need to be erected giving dates of nesting and general areas affected. This report should be aimed at making all people aware of the situation not just throwing slander at a certain group of individuals. Information and awareness is the answer not finger pointing.
I also agree with 'persecuted off roader' why was this report allowed to be issued with the biased heading, when further in the report dog walker were also mentioned. A reporter a little too keen to get their article read maybe?
The police who are sat in Abergavenny are always working, whether sitting at a bus station or otherwise, a real visible police presence is what is needed in the most crime affected areas, off-road riding is a very small activity to worry about and the most is not illegal at all, just tarred and judged by the few who don't understand 'rights of way'. When you have street crime in the towns and villages and tax payers money being wasted on off-road vehicles for the police when that money could be used to put more police on the street. I would rather see the police in the towns than on the mountains.
TK355 needs also to get their thoughts straight, hoodlums are active in the towns not on off-road vehicles, the most of the off-road users I meet are middle aged (40+) business men, very sensible law abiding individuals, not some glue sniffing hoodie from the towns.
