£20,000 of aid set for Madagascar

A Newport businessman is sending £20,000 worth of equipment to help disabled people in Madagascar.

Trevor Palmer has already sent equipment to Tsunami victims in Asia and earthquake victims in Kashmir.

He decided to help out people in Madagscar because of his friendship with Christina Dodwell, whose charity - The Dodwell Trust - supports the poor East African country.

Mr Palmer has worked around the world, in countries like Senegal and Ethiopia.

He said: “In many countries, it’s as if disabled people don’t exist. They can’t go to school and can’t get work. The equipment will give them opportunity.”

Mr Palmer’s Global Leather Consulting Company, based at Enterprise Way initially made leather products such as ladies' handbags.

But after he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1994, Mr Palmer realigned his work to make wheelchair accessories, leather gloves and bags for disabled people and walking sticks.

The £20,000 worth of equipment was collected from his own business plus two clients, Homecraft Rolyan and Able2Wear.

The goods include supports and belts for knee, back and ankle injuries plus physiotherapy equipment such as walking frames and hoists.

Miss Dodwell, a travel writer who lives in Monmouth, visited Mr Palmer’s warehouse on Saturday. She said: “It will be immensely appreciated.”

Miss Dodwell will now send a list of equipment to Madagascar’s Ministry of Health, asking if it will to pay for shipping of the equipment.

Newport West MP Paul Flynn also visited Mr Palmer's warehouse on Saturday.

On his internet blog, he praised Mr Palmer's not-for-profit work and the fact he continues to help poor countries despite his own disability.

Information on The Dodwell Trust is available at www.dodwell-trust.org and details of Mr Palmer’s work are at www.responsABLEassistance.org

Once again Javez shows his support for anything or anyone as long as it's not British, I'm surprised he's still living here.

i think the SWA must have removed javez's post that obviously said that he was glad the money was going abroad because local kids didn't want it.

all i can see here is the factual one that says a man can do what he wants with his own money.

To Gareth.
Obviously you know more than we do as nowhere in the SWA article do I see written, "Local kids didn't want it"

As for Javez if you look back at previous articles you will see he is totally defensive and supportive of immigrants and non-whites no matter what, he seems incapable of understanding that all people, no matter what colour, race, religion etc, can make mistakes.

The way I see it Mr Palmer is a local disabled person, good on him for actually going out to work and not staying at home claiming benefits - and **** better still that he is using his situation to help others that are far worse off than any of us in this country. I'd like to congratulate him on this work.

WITHOUT GOING TO MADAGASCAR AND COMPARING IT WITH ALL AREA'S OF THE UK YOU CAN'T POSSIBLY KNOW THIS.

OPEN YOUR EYES, THERE ARE PLENTY OF DESERVING CASES IN THIS COUNTRY BUT PEOPLE WITH GOOD INTENSIONS, WHO ARE OFTEN TOO BUSY HELPING FOREIGN COUNTRIES, IGNORE THEM.

How dare you! How inhumane and selfish. Yes, I HAVE seen people in other countries starving to death, or dying because the can't afford a simple vaccination. People who are injured and don't have access to basic health care and clean drinking water.

Orson Cart - open YOUR eyes!! I know all too well about deserving cases in this country too - I do a lot of volunteer work for amazing local and national charities in my spare time.

I think too many problems come from people too quick to judge who do nothing help.
