BLAENAU Gwent has its first independent mayor and Liberal Democrat deputy mayor.
Rassau councillor John Williams was elected last week after 34 years of service to his ward and chose Hospice of the Valleys, In the Pink and Blaenau Gwent District Scouts as his charities for the year.
Sirhowy councillor Brian Thomas became the first Liberal Democrat councillor to hold the position of deputy mayor after serving his ward for 36 years.
Outgoing mayor Labour's Jen Morgan, of Ebbw Vale North ward, handed over her title at the council's annual meeting on May 28.
She will announce how much she raised for her chosen charities, In the Pink and Hospice of the Valleys, later this month.
Cllr Williams said: "I have a task to do and I will carry it out with dignity and pride. I will hold the flag high for Blaenau Gwent wherever I go.
"I would like to thank Jen for her commitment, she has been an excellent Mayor. I have a lot to live up to."
Cllr Thomas said "I have waited 36 years for this day - I am the first Liberal Democrat councillor to hold civic office since Blaenau Gwent was formed back in 1974."
Cllr Des Hillman was re-elected for a second term as leader of Blaenau Gwent council at the meeting.
