Llanwern faces more job cuts

ALMOST 70 more jobs could be axed at Llanwern Steelworks.

It is another blow for workers at the plant just six months after it was revealed that the hot strip mill, employing more than 500 people, was closing.

Consultation will now take place over the potential loss of another 68 ancilliary jobs in Llanwern and 81 in Port Talbot, possibly in areas such as finance, human resources and commercial departments.

At the time of the closure announcement in January, Corus announced it was carrying out a functional review.

Robert Dangerfield, spokesman for the company, said this had led to a lot of speculation and they were now clarifying the position for the workforce.

Newport East MP Jessica Morden described it as bad news after bad news for workers and their families at Llanwern.

She hoped Corus would do everything they could to make the redundancies voluntary.

"The steel industry has been hit more quickly and severely than expected by the recession but we need Corus to take the long term view and do all they can to make sure that Llanwern is in the best place to take advantage of the up turn when it comes."

At its height, Llanwern employed people in the 1960s. Now a sibling plant to Port Talbot with the cold mill and galvanising line remaining, around 800 people work there.
