Abergavenny woman faces crash trial

AN ABERGAVENNY woman stood trial yesterday accused of driving without due care and attention.

Lady Elizabeth Crawshay, 82 of Merthyr Road, collided with a black Subaru Impreza on April 20 last year.

Following this collision the Subaru hit a Saab and Abergavenny couple Nicholas Fermor, 49 and wife Susan, 52 who were in Saab were killed.

Last month a judge directed that Samantha Mead of Penpergwm, who was driving the Subaru, was found not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

Yesterday Abergavenny magistrates court heard how Crawshay had been driving along the B4598 at around 50mph just before 12.30pm.

When she realised she had forgotten something she decided to use a layby at the Hardwick pub to turn around.

She claims she slowed down and indicated right before turning into the layby but said she was three quarters of the way into the layby when she felt a bang on the rear passenger side of her car.

Crawshay said she looked around but could not see any other vehicle and assumed the other driver had driven off.

She carried on turning and drove back down the road which was when she saw the collision which had happened between Mead and the Fermors.

Crawshay said that at no point did she connect the accident with the incident she had been involved in.

She reported her collision to police four days later after she saw an appeal for witnesses regarding the Fermor deaths and officers matched damage on her car to paint on Mead’s car.
