A MAN was taken to hospital yesterday after his car crashed into a pedestrian crossing on a busy Newport road.

Police were called to the incident on Cardiff Road, near the junction with Gaer Road, at around 3.38pm.

The navy blue Honda Odyssey car appeared to have collided with the barrier of the pedestrian crossing and hit a traffic light.

The man driving the car was helped out of the vehicle by paramedics and was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, by ambulance as a precaution.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Fire engines from Malpas and Maindee also attended the incident.
