A RISCA man was jailed for eight years yesterday after admitting raping a teenage girl and fathering her child.

Amir Miah, 36, of Commercial Street, appeared in Newport Crown Court for sentencing having previously pleaded guilty to rape.

Prosecutor John Warren told the court the rape took place in 2008 and resulted in the victim giving birth to a baby girl.

Mr Warren said the girl did not know she was pregnant, and stayed off school with what she believed to be a stomach upset, but gave birth to the child in the toilet.

The court heard the girl and her baby were taken to hospital and the baby was found to have disabilities.

Mr Warren said the girl did not reveal who the father was until she told a counsellor during a session at school earlier this year.

Miah was arrested and denied the offence during interview, before being released on bail.

When he was interviewed a second time police told him DNA evidence showed he was the father of the child, but he made no comment.

Representing Miah, Nicholas Gareth Jones said the incident was an isolated offence and Miah had lost his reputation, his employment, and had vast debts.

Judge Christopher Llewellyn-Jones told him: “Frankly you disgust me. In 2008 you satisfied your own perverted lust on this girl.

“As a result of that she became pregnant. She had no idea what was happening to her during that pregnancy and gave birth in appalling circumstances.”

“You say you have remorse for what you did, I’m not sure that you do. You seem to be more concerned about the effect on you than upon the poor child.”

Judge Llewellyn-Jones sentenced Miah to eight years in prison and made him the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for 15 years.

He was also banned from working with children.
