HUNDREDS of people are expected to turn out for a glimpse of the stars of the YouTube phenomenon Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind) at the city’s Transporter Bridge tomorrow.

Alex Warren, 24, and Terema Wainwright, 25, who play Jay Z and Alicia Keys in the spoof version of the number one hit New York Empire State of Mind, will return to Newport for an exclusive live performance at the opening of the iconic Transporter Bridge.

The video has been viewed more than 1,653,000 times on YouTube since last week, so their appearance, alongside the video’s director MJ Delany, could attract hundreds of fans.

This will be the first time the stars have been in Newport since making the video here in June.

Their UK-wide popularity means Newport City Council have moved the event from the Pill side of the bridge to the Stephenson Street side to accommodate more people.

Members of the public are invited to get to the bridge for 10.30am where a mini-stage will be set up in Coronation Park.

The crowds will be entertained with a performance by the City of Newport Male Choir.

This will be followed by speeches by the mayor and council leader Matthew Evans.

Children’s Choir, Cor Casnewydd, will then take to the stage before Mr Warren and Ms Wainright sing the YouTube hit live just after 11am.

Visitors will then have the chance to take a ride across the gondola from 12pm as the bridge opens for the first time in two years.

The Transporter Bridge was closed in 2008 due to safety concerns and reopens after the completion of a £1.225 million restoration project.

Finishing touches were carried out on the Pill side of the bridge yesterday after two cast iron gateposts were damaged when they were hit by a mobile platform.

Gwent Police said there will not be any officers dedicated to tomorrow's event but that there will be officers in the area as part of their daily patrols.
