Newport identical twins a-mazing results

IDENTICAL twins who gained the same grades in the same subjects were among the students celebrating in Newport yesterday.

Josie and Bethany Singleton, both 18 and from Brynglas, each gained Bs in maths and psychology and a C in biology at Newport High School and are hoping to go university together in either Cardiff or Bristol to study science.

Josie, who is the oldest by two minutes, said: “Our parents are really pleased and thought we’d get the same.”

Their classmate Helen Wood, from Bettws, achieved three As and will study psychology.

She said: My mum and grandpa tried to get into Oxford but didn’t, so my family are ecstatic.”

The school saw 94 percent of its students gain an A-level this year and 65 percent of pupils achieving grades A* to C.

Across the city, students achieved an A* to E pass rate of 98.1 percent - one percent above the Welsh national average, but 0.1 percent down on last year’s figure.

The city also saw 8.5 percent of its students achieve the new A* grade - two percent higher than the Welsh average.

St Joseph’s High School scored a 98.9 percent pass rate and 29 percent of its students gained an A* or A grade.

Rougemont School has achieved its 100 per cent pass rate for the seventh year running, with 80 percent of its pupils achieving either an A*, A or B grade this year.

Sandhya Sreekumar, 18, from Newport, was awarded four A*s and an A and will now study engineering at Cambridge University.
