WHILE many students in Torfaen celebrated outstanding grades, the number of A* to E grades was slightly down on last year’s figure.

Students achieved these grades in 96.6 percent of subject entries compared to 97.4 percent in 2009.

Overall, 21.7 per cent of subject entries gained an A* or A grade.

Out of 113 students sitting A-Levels at Croesyceiliog Comprehensive School, 13 got straight A grades.

The highest achiever was 18-year-old Rhys Cook who gained A*s in English Literature and History and A in music.

The barritone has been singing for five years and now plans to study classical singing at the Trinity College of Music, London.

Ryan Davies, 18, from Pontnewydd gained A grades in chemistry, German and maths and an A* in further mathsHe will study maths and German at Birmingham University.

St Albans School in Pontypool also gained good results, with Lewys Jones, 18, excelling with A* in art, A in maths and B in physics and chemistry.

He will now study architecture at Cardiff University.
