A RECORD crowd of nearly 5,000 people soaked up the sunshine at the annual Rogerstone Village Festival.

Visitors young and old enjoyed visiting some of the 46 stalls, rides and food stands at the Welfare Grounds on Monday.

Belly dancers from Newport's Jawahir Middle Eastern dance club, a dog show and the Fusion street dancers entertained the hoardes of people topping up their suncream at the event, organised by the Rogerstone Village Festival Committee and supported by the community council.

Member Valerie Dudley said it had taken months of planning and all of the money raised will be ploughed back into community groups.

Following a chat with the festival committee, the mayor of Newport enjoyed a tour of the event, now in its sixth year.

Funds are raised at the free event by the raffle, fairground and stall fees.

Mrs Dudley said she wanted to thank all the contributors for making the day bigger and better every year.
