A 26-YEAR-OLD man was arrested on suspicion of assault yesterday in connection with an incident where a Llanelli rugby player lost his sight one eye during a match against Cross Keys.

Gavin Quinnell lost the sight in his left eye following an incident during a game at Pandy Park on October 2.

Gwent police said yesterday that a man had been arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed pending further enquiries, but the force refused to say whether the arrested man was a Cross Keys player or where he is from.

The Argus reported last month how Gwent Police were investigating an allegation of assault after the incident during a ruck, while Scarlets and Llanelli lodged a formal citing complaint with the Welsh Rugby Union.

Cross Keys passed on the club's best wishes to Mr Quinnell, who was told he had lost his sight at Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital, but the club would not comment further in the incident.

In a statement issued with the Quinnell family, the Scarlets said the lock's family were 'shocked' and 'devastated' by the news the player had permanently lost the sight in his life eye.

A police spokeswoman said he was due to answer bail in January.
