CALLS to cut Severn Bridge tolls are being welcomed The Freight Transport Association said the Welsh Affairs Select Committee report, which called for tolls to be reduced after the government takes over the crossings in 2017, represents a significant step forward in acknowledging the damage done to Welsh firms by the charges.
The body gave evidence to the committee in October.
Ian Gallagher, policy manager for Wales, said the government should take a long hard look at the failure of the regulations on tolls which leave the government unable to freeze or reduce them while the bridges are operated by a private company.
He added: “It is also important that flexibility is built into the payment structure and governments both in Cardiff and Westminster should resist the urge to look at the Bridges as a cash cow.
"Business simply cannot withstand it.”
South East Wales AM Veronica German has also welcomed the recommendations.
She said the tolls are detrimental to businesses in Wales and to the local economy.
