A NEWPORT champion gymnast entertained shoppers to raise more than £200 to put towards his next competition.
The current Welsh Under- 16 gymnastics champion Joseph Rowland, 15, of Malpas, performed routines to visitors at the Asda supermarket, Pill, and also helped customers with their bag packing.
Joseph is part of the Asda Athlete programme which sees the supermarket support talented young athletes in the community.
The £201 raised from the displays and bag packing will be put towards costs for his next international competition in Portugal – the Porto Cup, which takes place in May. This includes paying competition fees, buying new kit and covering some travel costs for his training beforehand.
Joseph, who trains at Barry YMCA, will compete with the Welsh Under-16 team at the event.
The Llantarnam Comprehensive pupil said: “I had a target of £200 to raise so was really pleased to reach that target.
“I’d like to thank Asda for their support too.”
