THE joys of spring are starting to show in Pontypool Park thanks to local residents who took part in a Wild Weekend bulb planting event organised by Pontypool Park Friends.
The group joined forces with Torfaen council, local residents and children from the Pontymoile under-fives’ nursery to plant more than 3,000 spring-flowering bulbs.
Pontypool Park Friends held the event in the park last October.
The group also organised wood-carving demonstrations, bushcraft and children were able to build their own birdboxes and bird feeders to take home.
The event was made possible due to grants from Pontypool Round Table, local councillors, Pontypool Community Council and Keep Wales Tidy.
The grants let Pontypool Park Friends buy banners to advertise its activities, 1,500 snowdrops, 1,500 daffodils, 500 crocuses and the equipment needed to run future events.
The Wild Weekend was the first event organised by Pontypool Park Friends and the group was extremely pleased with the result.
Deputy chairman Peter Fry said: “It is great to see the bulbs starting to come up and to see everyone’s hard work come to fruition.”
