A NEWPORT care home will close with the loss of 36 jobs.

Ty Craig Nursing Home, which provides nursing, palliative and respite care for 24 older people in Malpas, will close its doors in June.

A spokeswoman for its owners, The Priory Group, who took over last year, said a decline in resident numbers, the challenge of recruiting experienced and qualified staff, and the building not being fit for purpose had led to the “very difficult decision.”

She said the firm would be working closely with the residents to help find alternative homes with as little disruption as possible and said its team of full and part time staff would be supported in finding alternative employment.

She added: “This decision has not been taken lightly as our absolute priority is always the people who we care for, their families and our staff.”

The Aneurin Bevan Health Board and Newport council confirmed the home's owners had given notice of its intent to close the premises.

Speaking on behalf both organisations, a council spokeswoman said it was working with everyone affected to find suitable alternative accommodation for the residents, who are currently undergoing medical, nursing and social care needs assessments.

She said: “Everything possible is being done to minimise the risks associated with moving. We will ensure that each person is well-supported before, during and after their move.

“The Priory Group has given us assurances that the safety and well-being of service users are a priority and it will work closely with us to support the safe transfer of all residents to alternative accommodation.”
