Roof at Newport University campus damaged

NEWPORT'S city centre university campus is closed after rough weather blew part of the roof off.

Gwent Police closed Usk Way outside the university building at 9.36am after strong winds and rain caused the damage.

The road remains closed.

Yes. It's a cheap poorly designed building. If the wind gets under the roof which it will the way it is designed, damage will occur.

We were at The Dolman Theatre this morning for Britains Does Variety wales final and saw the winds take part of the roof off the University sheets of metal flying through the air as if they were pieces of paper also the fibre glass material which lined the roof, the debris lines the side roads in newport today, was very freightning to watch

THe building has been up a couple of years now and whilst you might expect minor snagging issues in the first year that does not include huge chunks of the roof comming off which also poses a serious risk to passing vehicles and pedestrians.

Clearly a proper safety assessement needs to be carried out as well as a proper assessement of the poor roof design and action taken to remedy the major problems with the roof of the building.

Whilst the recent weather had strong gust of wind they were not at the level that structural damage should have occured so clearly there are serious problems with the roof design of this building.
