BREAKING: Motorcyclist killed in Pontypool crash

9:16am Sunday 20th May 2012 in Gwent news

A MOTORCYCLIST has died following a collision with a car near Pontypool.

The 20-year-old man suffered fatal injuries when his bike collided with a dark coloured Ford Fiesta on the McDonald's roundabout on the junction between the A472 and A4042 yesterday.

Police said the incident happened at 6.05pm as the motorcyclist travelled around the roundabout from Pontypool towards Cwmbran.

Anyone with information about is asked to call the Gwent Police Collision Investigation Unit on 01633 642404.

What a stupid Blaenavon comment! If you don't know how to use a roundabout GET OFF THE ROADS. Sympathies with the riders loved ones, as always, in a car/bike incident the cyclist always comes off worse

Saw a near miss just 5 days ago at the same spot, the bike braked & swerved just in time. There needs to be a 'Think Bike' sign as you pull out from the McDonalds exit.

I believe Blaenavon means they know how to use the roundabout they just choose to endanger themselves and other Road User!!

As they have the mentality
"I will not indicate",
"I will not be overtaken"
and so on!!!

Not to mention the Brain-deads who come roaring towards the roundabout at 70mph to get in front of you then drive really slowly. Really? You take a risk to cut out into oncoming traffic then follow it up by driving painfully slowly?

It is not a stupid comment. As an instructor there are many many people who either don't know how or choose not to drive correctly on a roundabout. And this roundabout is a nightmare many many times I have had to dual control a student due to other drivers...but the real sad fact is yet another loss of life.

In my opinion this roundabout and the one after County hall towards Newport are dangerous at peak times. The speed of vehicles (many not indicating) driving around these is often excessive.

I absolutly agree with this comment. Pick a roundabout any roundabout and stand and observe the way drivers navigate it. I think you will be suprised at how many drivers do not have a clue!

Deepest sympathy to this young riders family. I totally agree with Strider the mentality of some drivers on these roundabouts is crazy I think they should mark the roads on all roundabouts with which lane is what. The New Inn roundabout is the same coming from Cwmbran you take your life in your hands drivers should have more consideration to others.

Deepest sympathy to this young man's family, I use this roundabout everyday and exit into the Skewfield site coming from Crumlin, not a week goes by when I do not have a near miss from someone driving from Cwmbran and they have the cheek to beep their horn or shout expletives at me, and when leaving work it is a rat run to get out because of the speed of some drivers , I have often spent over 10 mins trying to exit, my office overlooks this roundabout, and there are regular accidents here.

The problem with this roundabout is the driver travelling from Pontypool who get’s in the left hand lane drives past Harvesters, Usk/Abergavenny and McDonalds exits, then turns left toward Cwmbran and in so doing cuts up anyone driving in the correct right hand lane and blocks anyone travelling from Cwmbran exiting in either of those directions

Deepest sympathies to the family

While I’m at it and in the same area, keep an eye on Penperlleni Pitch where vehicles stop half way up the hill in the outside lane and cross double yellow lines to access The Secret Garden Nursery and Restaurant

You are totally correct the drivers are at fault not the roundabouts something needs to be done to avoid this happening again.

you are actually allowed to do this, two lanes entering two lanes exiting its in the highway code, its people who enter the rounabaout from pontypool wanting to go into mcodonalds/grage then cut across, they should be in the left lane.

It would not arm anyone if the council or the police whoever it is down to to put road markings for the idiot drivers because at the end of the day that is what we need on all the roundabouts in Britain then there should not be any mistakes. As there are a number of bad roundabout in Torfaen like the top of Malpas, New Inn, the back of Asda in Cwmbran and it is all driver error not wanting to drive correctly or cant be bothered. Maybe they could introduce a driving test that's harder or have a test every couple of years. Lets look at the statitics and work out the errors of the people surely something can be done to prevent these types of accidents.

Actually unless it is marked on the road you can use either the left or right to continue straight ahead (the McDonald's turn off). It is up to the driver to choose the most appropriate lane. Therefore both lanes can be used.

It all comes down to the fact that people should be observant and willing to give way if necessary.

Cwmbran is a right hand turn from Pontypool, always has been. Everyone should be in the right hand lane to approach the roundabout. Those in the left hand lane know they are in the wrong as they all indicate right!

Maybe now we'll see some action. Condolences to the family

About six months ago on this exact roundabout I got hit of my motorbike a van did not see me hit me side on I fell into the road and the driver drove off my bike was ruined but I was lucky, sympathy with the family this roundabout needs looking at it is so dangerous.

This roundabout is the worst! It seams no one knows what anyone is doing or where they are going....
I have two bikers in my household and thank god they have done advance riding...this helps them by trying to read what the other road users are planing on doing before they do!
This roundabout needs new clear road markings like the Caldra(when they got it right!)
