LOCAL primary school teachers are top of the class after taking part in Welsh lessons.

A handful of teachers are proving star students at the Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre based at Coleg Gwent’s Pontypool Campus.

The centre is delivering full-time intensive Welsh courses for the teachers after being selected for the role by the Welsh government earlier this year, and the 11-week courses are proving to be a great success.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to improve our Welsh language skills to help children in the classroom,”

said Dina Little, a teacher at Ty-Sign Primary School in Risca.

“I’m part of a great group and we’re all really enjoying the experience of learning together to develop our own Welsh teaching.”

The course aims to develop primary teachers’ Welsh language skills to Welsh for Adults Foundation Level, the first step of a recognised path to learning Welsh.

The long-term aim is to teach Welsh or through the medium of Welsh, contributing to bilingualism in schools and creating a Welsh language ethos.
