A NEWPORT woman has been given a regional award having raised more than £20,000 in just the past three years for charity.
Anne Lockett, 52, from Malpas, Newport, was named as the South Wales British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cymru volunteer of the year, after six-and-a-half years service fundraising for the charity.
Mrs Lockett, who has a full-time job in Cardiff, has been on more than 30 bucket collections and been part of 12 fundraising events across the region in that period, including three years as the chairwoman of the Newport and Cwmbran fundraising group for the charity.
She first became involved with the charity in 2005 when her father had to have a second heart valve operation. Mrs Lockett and her husband Richard, 63, were celebrating their silver wedding anniversary later that year and instead of receiving gifts the couple asked for money to be donated to the BHF to help continue its vital research work.
It was on donating the money Mrs Lockett was persuaded to take up fundraising and she has never left.
Mrs Lockett, said: " I was completely shocked when I was told I had won as I didn't even know I had been nominated. I am very flattered.
"You see a lot of big sums being raised on the news but fundraising isn't just about those big one-off events it is about doing as much as you can do as often as you can. £10 raised is £10 more than if you didn't fundraise at all.
I have made some wonderful friends through volunteering and I think it is a great thing to be involved with.
If you can make another family who might be suffering with heart disease's lives a bit better, then it is not a chore it an absolute pleasure to be involved."
Sharon Owen, fundraising volunteer manager for South East Wales, who nominated Mrs Lockett for the award, said: " I am delighted we can recognise Anne's commitment to BHF Cymru, she is always at the forefront of all events and seems to effortlessly juggle numerous tasks."
