NEWPORT was in the grips of a monster invasion yesterday, as creatures from another galaxy took over the city.

Monsters from the hit TV series Dr Who were on hand to torment the morning’s commuters, spilling into Market Square and the bus station.

And with no sign of the famous timelord, residents were left to fend for themselves against the galactic beasts.

An Ood – a telepathic alien with tentacles all over the lower part of his face – and a Silent, which looks a bit like Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream, were the two monsters the people of Newport were faced with.

They arrived in the city after escaping from the soonto- open Dr Who Experience in Cardiff – although the Argus can’t be sure it saw a Silent, as anyone who sees them is said to forget about ever having seen them straight away.

Having marauded through Newport, the monsters went on to Swansea, before storming Cardiff Castle.

The escape was all part of a stunt to promote the opening of the new Dr Who Experience in Cardiff Bay, which is due to open on July 20.

Paula Al Lach, head of exhibitions for BBC Worldwide, said the opening wouldn’t be delayed by the monsters’ escape.

“Absolutely not,” she said.

“We will have the monsters contained and back in place ready for our official launch next month.”

Monsters were on the right, people from Newport usually look like the one on the left.
