Gwent AM’s plea on exam shake-up

EXAM PLEA: William Graham AM EXAM PLEA: William Graham AM

A SEPARATE qualification system in Wales could spell disaster, according to one Gwent AM.

William Graham, Conservative AM for South Wales East, said Wales would be better off with a common set of qualifications so higher education entrants are not discriminated against.

Leaks last week suggested that the UK government education secretary Michael Gove has drawn up a plan to replace GCSEs with an Olevel style qualification in England.

But Welsh education minister Leighton Andrews has ruled out introducing O-levels in Wales.

Mr Graham, who is also the Assembly Tories’ business manager and chief whip, told the Argus a separate qualification system in Wales could be disastrous.

He said that the Welsh Baccalaureate is not as well recognised by universities as it could be.

He said: “I think it would be better off having a common set of qualifications so our higher education entrants are not discriminated against.”

Of course there should be a common set of qualifications, but alas I can see the Assembly doing their usual trick of being different just for the sake of it.

I can't see unis being too concerned about quals taken at 16 - it's the A levels that count, and nobody is suggesting moving away from those.

I can't comment further on the subject unfortunately - Gove's stupid Pob-like face renders me incapable of rational thought, let alone debate.

There is no reason that a seperate education system should cause discrimination against welsh students when they apply for university. Scotland has A separate system and when I applied for university it wasn't a problem.

There is every reason, if universities believe that the Welsh system is inferior!?
