IT could soon be an offence for dog owners to allow their dogs into children's play areas if a Caerphilly council proposal is given the go ahead.

The council is currently undertaking a public consultation regarding the proposals to make it an offence for dog owners to allow their dogs to enter enclosed children's play areas and Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs).

The proposals would also reinforce the offence of allowing a dog to foul without cleaning up the mess.

In the 2011 Household Survey, 49 percent of residents identified dog fouling as a problem, and whilst most dog owners are responsible and clean up after their dogs, there are still a small number of dog owners who allow their dogs to foul - despite extensive media coverage, education and enforcement.

Caerphilly Youth Forum have also marked parks and play areas as their priority issue, working all year to help children's play areas become cleaner, safer places for children of the county borough to enjoy.

Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services urged people to have their said: "The household survey results showed the responsible ownership of dogs is a key concern for residents. We're keen to listen to residents views and act accordingly to address concerns."

If the Dog Control Orders are introduced under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 offenders would receive a fine of £75 or could face up to £1,000 if the matter is put before the courts.

To see a copy of the proposed orders and a full list of 106 council owned enclosed children's play areas and 27 MUGA to which they would apply go to www.caerphilly.gov.uk .

Residents can submit their views in writing to Environmental Health Manager, Pontllanfraith House, Pontllanfraith, Blackwood, NP12 2YW or by email at foodhealthandsafety@caerphilly.gov.uk The consultation ends on Sunday September 30.
