'Dream' comes true as plans for half marathon are unveiled

NEWPORT is to join cities across the UK in staging its own half-marathon it was announced today.
The 13.1 mile race, scheduled for 3 March next year, is organised by St David’s Hospice Care and is over a flat course, making it suitable for every level of ability and for runners looking for a personal best.
Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care said: “It has long been our dream to host a fundraising event such as this in Newport. We have been working tirelessly with Newport City Council and various other partners to come up with a course that is both safe and interesting.”
The South Wales Argus is the media partner for the event and we will keeping you up to date with news and information on the race. Digital Editor and runner Martin Wade will be writing a blog on the half-marathon from early next year.
The traffic-free race route will showcase some of Newport’s best landmarks as it follows the River Usk, including the cycle path to Caerleon, before returning to the city.
The event is also timed to complement training for runners aiming to compete in the London Marathon.
Newport ex-Olympian Darren Campbell is supporting the half-marathon and said: “Running has been my life and passion and I'm thrilled to be able help open up the sport to even more people and also raise funds for St David's Hospice Care.”
The race starts at 9am from the Newport International Sports Village with entries costing £22 with every runner receiving an event T-Shirt.
Registration is open on the website stdavidshospicecare.org or on runnersworld.co.uk You can also enter in person at a special launch event on Friday 14 September at the New Day Hospice Centre at Blackett Avenue, Newport between 5.30pm and 7pm.
