A GWENT MP has been suspended from the House of Commons today after calling the secretary of state for defence Philip Hammond a liar.

Paul Flynn, MP for Newport West, made the comment following a statement on Afghanistan in the House of Commons.

Mr Flynn was given a chance to withdraw the statement. However he didn't and accepted the consequences of not doing so.

The suspension will last a day.

Mr Flynn is well known for his opposition to the UK's involvement in the Afghanistan conflict, and recently tabled parliamentary motions detailing the names of more than 400 dead soldiers

Well done Paul Flynn for standing by your comments in the House of Commons, its about time we had a MP who stands by his beliefs and speaks out, I am so proud to think that he has spoken out for his own and so many others beliefs

Check out Paul's record in politics - consistent and principled. Unless you get your 'news' from the Sun(Beano) and allow your opinions to be formed by this or other similar means, you will always be gullible to the gung-ho, fascist, crap from across the pond that has caused so much misery and suffering around the world. The Labour Party that Paul joined, might have been flawed, but at least you knew where you stood with them. Since the arch War Criminal Blair hijacked the party, 'New Labour' now bears little resemblence, to the working class, anti-war inclined party that most remember. Depressingly, Blair's policies have been perpetuated by His successors, in reality, all centre-ground, regardless of Tory/Labour tag. How, we desperately need more MPs of substance like Paul in parliment to help restore real democracy and independence from super-power bullies. The extra bonus could be, that the publics faith in our democracy would be restored

Paul has always been a fully paid up member of the 'awkard squad' throughout his political career. He has been a pain in the butt to both the Tories and his own party over the years. Check his record on the wars in Iraq and Afganisthan and he has always spoken against. Mr Hammond was probably speaking untruths but protocall want allow members to say it, Paul was suspended not for what he said, but for the manner he said it.

That being said, its good to know hes causing trouble for the establishment even in his old age. Dont change Paul !

Never forget it was Blair's massive lie to us all that got us into this in the first place. I applaud Flynn's stance on our brave boys being killed but I also understand why they are there still in Afghanistan, sadly you can't make an omelette without cracking eggs. What is pathetic is the red lemmings who just post on their message boards 'nice one Paul' or 'well done Paul' forgetting that the Socialists got us into this in the first place - a bit late for moral high ground now!

Well done paul flynn for not withdrawing your comments, even though I dont always like what you pick and choose to argue about!

What I dont understand is that MPs are suppose to be protected within the House of Commons environment so they can ask awkward questions and usually say what they want without being lodged with court papers & suspended from duty. You only got to see how MPs were allowed to speak about matters leading up to the Levinson inqury, but as soon as MPs start questioning about the ethics & other issues relating to our servicemen being slaughtered (not always in combat).

If an elected representative cannot say what he believes to be right in a democratic environment such as House of Commons and question time, what chance do normal joe public have in making a stand for their own democratic rights!

I would like to see all politicians spend some time out in Afghanistan etc and on the front line. I think there would be a totally different perspective.

Power to the People!!!!

I think Mr Paul Flynn MP has a right to change his mind, he can put his feelings into words to capture the moment in the House of Commons, even though it got him suspended, As Paul Flynn said, " The danger to our Soldiers has been prolonged by those on the front bench who have had the power to stop it. Other countries have removed their soldiers and are not doing what we are doing, in arming and training our future enemy, is this not similar to the end of the first World War, when it was said that Politicians Lied and Soldiers Died, and the reality was, as it is now, that our brave Soldier lions were being led by Ministerial Donkeys?" and i agree with Mr Paul Flynn MP, and in case you don't know, the only Legal Political Party that would bring our forces home and have already petitioned this Government to bring that about is the British National Party...

I am very proud to have Paul Flynn as my MP. He stands up for what he thinks is right, no matter what the consequences are. I have been lucky enough to meet him a few times at various AGM's and on a trip to the House of Commons and find him to be a very honourable man. Well done again.I must add that I am not a political animal and I will not vote for Labour, nor for conservatives on principle. I did vote LIb Dem for a while, but have been cured of that now.as well. I think all MP's and councillors should be independents and only in parliament or on the council to represent the views of their constituents and not have to follow party lines. The system is wrong.

The evidence base now confirms that cannabis damages the developing brains of adolescents who smoke it, leading to long term problems including enduring psychosis. Take this into account the next time you think about stating that cannabis is a safe drug Paul. You are doing Newports youngsters a disservice.

We all love our eccentrics, but it is probably an serious mistake to elect any of them. Mr Murphy has joined or created so many bandwagons to jump on he has lost the point of why he is there. I.E, to represent US, not to use his office as a personal platform to pontificate on every piddling or minority/crackpot issue the media puts out... That's our job ! He's a joke in Westminster, but it reflects on us.

I have never heard Flynn or for that matter anyone else who advocates the legalisation of Marijuana suggest it being used by adolescents. There's no doubt that the heavy use of any drug like alcohol or tobacco will lead to health problems.

labour will always get in in newport all they have to say to the vulnerable (lazy and useless) those nasty tories will stop you disability/incap benefits and you might have to do some work and it will have them in the voting office in thier droves

I feel I have some affiliation with Paul Flynn. I believe I was the first member of the public to be ejected from the public gallery of the Welsh Senedd for calling Rhodri Morgan, the First Minister at the time, a liar. He had made a totally untrue statement to members in the Senedd. So I reminded him of this untrue statement and was quickly ejected from the building.
I also feel that Paul Flynn has been in the wrong political party for the past 20 years. For unlike most Welsh MPs, he will stand up to both Labour and the Tories over what is best for Wales.
