Disabled hit by closure

First published in Letters

WHAT is wrong with Newport Council – closing the market car park at its busiest time of year for contractors to use as storage space? Now the car park is closed from November 12: where are disabled people going to park or get their mobility aids from?

I think you'll find if you look on Newport City Council's website that there is disabled parking in the majority of the 'Pay and Display' car parks in the City Centre, where parking is free of charge for those with a Blue Badge.

It is a shame that the City Centre is having to be dug up during this festive period, however what is the alternative? The works need to be done!

Heelllloooo ! Disabled Parking dont worry these elected councillors in the slightest, Typical behaviour of Newport City Council. Whilst we are on the subject of Disability, does anyone actually get Direct Payments from this council ? And to think the Gaer Labour Candidates had the cheek to campaign in the last Local Government Elections asking if we were suffering cuts to 'Care in the Community'. Now they are back in power, the answer is YES the Disabled are suffering cuts by this council, now what are you going to do about it ? Answers on a postcard please !

Sure the work needs to be done. It would be interesting to know what pressure the NCC have put on the gas board, what penalties are in place for over-run, what commitment of work hours has been made.

Given the massive impact this has on an already beleaguered city centre one would expect that the work had been given the utmost priority and that the penalties in place would be such that the gas board would need to work around the clock and in multiple locations.

Town should be awash with Wales & West paid workers ensuring the work is completed as soon as physically possible.

This doesn't appear to be the case.

If the timing is due to safety then all the more reason for expediency. If not then it should have been left until after Christmas IMO. However I do note that the works mentioned appear to have been scheduled for the Summer - so how much per day are the gas company being charged for over-run of the works?
