Bible offers a joyful ending
1:00pm Thursday 3rd January 2013 in Letters
I HAVE no comment to make on the debate between RK Roger and Terry Banfield, but I note that he mentions “the outdated notion of original sin.” The words ‘original sin’ does not occur in scripture, but the origin of sin is spoken of, what the almighty is doing about it and its eventual eradication from the Earth.
Mr Banfield’s detestation of things divine continues apace. But let us make a comparison. What does his atheism have to offer to us? An unproven and unscientific view of the universe and this Earth. A random mutation, joyless and purposeless as Mike Buckingham once described it. What does the Bible have to offer? A divine purpose centred in Christ threading its way through history towards an ultimate and joyful conclusion.

Banfield's atheism doesn't claim to offer anything at all, and if you could really conceive what it means to be a godless individual, then you wouldn't expect it too either.
Once again I have to point out that it is possible to decide that the bible is wrong, to not buy into the 'spooky wookys' without knowing anything about science. Though some may bump into the question through education and culture.
Atheism in Britain is not the same as the states, we don't need 'reason rallys' to fight religious fundamentalists trying to harm education and such.
As for original sin and the ultimate and joyful conclusion Tom, I don't know what you are talking about, and since the other 10,000 denominations of christianity can't agree on it either, then I'm pretty sure you don't either.
Atheism neither offers or claims to offer anything in the way of giving a person a world view and a way to live your life. If atheism is a religion, then 'off' is a TV channel. There is only an empty void to be filled if you have given up years of believing in god and have many questions left open as a result of always using 'god' as an answer.
The good news is that the real answers are exciting and enlightening, and unifying. Though you will have to take responsibility for your own thoughts and actions. I don't know what Banfield's answer will be to this 'non sequitur' of a question, I hope he sees it for what it is.
I can't tell you how much of a bad idea it is to use a book of ancient desert fairy tales as an absolute guide on how to live your life, and what you should judge to be moral.
Unquestionable obedience to an absolute authority is what gets you Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot.
Atheists don't detest god, they are outraged that 'god' is still an acceptable excuse for saying and doing the most deplorable and often harmful things. Hold your silly beliefs if you will, but just know that they are not equally valid or practical to a society that does not agree, and is not sat around waiting for the rapture.

What did Stalin ,Hitler, Pol Pot ,etc offer
Atheists rightly point at the people that religion has killed. But I don't think that the kettle can call the pot black
