Confused by parking fees
1:01pm Thursday 3rd January 2013 in Letters
IN MY experience, Newport city councillors, of whatever political persuasion, are kind, wise people with the interests of the city very much at heart.
That makes the decision to stop free parking in the council’s city car parks very difficult to understand, especially when free unlimited parking is to be found at stores on the city’s edge. The trouble is that large majorities sometimes lead those who govern into a false sense of security, and they forgo the need to listen. It would be very sad if present plans were to leave the city centre even deader than it is and therefore become so unpopular as to be the current administration’s equivalent of a Poll Tax.

I would not disagree that high streets are changing and will continue to change. Very few people now do their shopping in the High Street
Newport is already has far to many shops , most empty. Building more is not sensible
All Newport needs is the Kingsway Centre, John Frost Square & the old Market
The old market though is a disgrace currently. dark, dirty, rundown and with shabby stalls selling tat.
To succed it needs to be smart but kept in keeping with the character of the building
You need a good selection of stall that are well kept and properly presented. THe current ones would not look out of place in an African shanty town.

Really?
Town centres have been in decline for years and it's not just Newport.
The council don't own the shops and they can't force retailers to open in Newport. Poundland by the bus station is empty, if you want to rent it its 80,000 a year plus rates.
Who would pay that?
It's the same for all the empty shops in town.
Owned by outsiders who don't care. The council are powerless to stop it.
The last lot put up signs costing hundreds of thousands saying "Newport open for business", we all know that was a joke and so were they.
The Con/Libs also saddled Newport with Friars Walk which is never going to happen ever!
We have enough empty shops why build more?
The reason the town centre is dead is coz no one goes there. People complain but they all go to Tesco and all go the Cwmbran so what do you expect.
Without any money or carrots to pay retailers like Debenhams, who were offered 4 million to come to Newport, or buying up the empty shops, there is nothing that can be done.
There is no money.
We are screwed so get use to it.
